Sample tasks for each one of the learning stanards are currently being developed and published to this site, by grade as well.

Deep Curriculum Alignment Project for Mathematics
An Overview
Many factors have contributed to the need for a Deeply Aligned Regional Mathematics Curriculum, with specific concept-driven objectives for each grade level, K-8. A focused, coherent mathematics curriculum with a regional scope has the potential to ease the impact of widely varying learning expectations on both students and teachers. In addition, a focused (regional) curriculum would allow teachers to commit more time each year to topics receiving special emphasis. At the same time, students would have opportunities to explore these topics in depth, in the context of related content and connected applications throughout the school year, thus developing a more robust mathematical understanding. Participants in this three year process have begun to collaborate with other teachers and administrators across the region as they have begun to work towards the completion of this deeply aligned, regional mathematics curriculum.

During the first phase (2009-2010) of the Mathematics Deep Curriculum Alignment Project for Mathematics, teachers from Western New York challenged to analyze and further develop Regional Curriculum Focal Points for Kindergarten through Grade 8 Mathematics.These critical indicators were further reviewed based on Reeveā€™s definition of Power Performance Indicator Criteria: Endurance, Leverage, and Essential for the next level of learning. The developed Regional Curriculum Focal Points illustrate the most critical performance indicators, to be emphasized and aligned to key concepts, spiraled throughout the year in order to promote higher retention rates of key mathematical understandings. These Power Performance Indicators, as well as the NYS Assessment Items that are aligned to the Curriculum Focal Points, have been deconstructed this phase for embedded skills, concepts, language (in relation to vocabulary and symbolic notation) and cognitive demands. This process has help lead the region to identifying vertical trends in each of the deconstructed areas. These vertical trends will provide guidance when building the regional curriculum and formative assessments during the next two phases. In addition, these trends have also been linked to the Common Core State Standards that have been recently develop, making the transition into the new standards much easier. During the second phase(2010-2011) of the Deep Curriculum Alignment Project for Mathematics, the vertical trends (established from phase 1) will be instrumental in the development of writing grade specific regional mathematics curriculum that is aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. Researched-based instructional strategies for the identified key concepts of Phase 1 will be identified and rich resourcs will be linked to the embedded skills. .Districts will then have the opportunity to use this regional curriculum to analyze and realign their current district curriculum for prioritized content and instructional effectiveness.

During the third phase (2011-2012), grade specific, diagnostic and formative sample tasks will be developed to authentically measure student understanding around the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. Mathematical language and core vocabulary terms will be established by grade, also aligned to the Common Core Learning Standards for Mathematics. A regional CCLS scope & sequence will also be explored by grade during the last session. All materials & documents will be accessable to all particiapting districts via the web.
